The charm of rail travel is not lost on Canada. Between both transcontinental private sleeper cabins and sunlit glass-domed viewing cars, the choice is yours for the making.
Summary
- Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail both offer rail travel in Canada
- Rocky Mountaineer focuses on luxury daytime journeys, while VIA Rail offers classic long-distance sleeper trains
- Choosing which train to take will change the tone of your vacation
Rail travel in Canada can look one of many ways. Early mornings deep in the prairies are all sunrises and glowing golden wheat fields. Mid-afternoon in the Canadian Rockies might be slowing alongside a waterfall or breaking out of a deep canyon into a wide valley.
The question of 'Rocky Mountaineer or VIA Rail' is just this: comparing two wildly different experiences as if they're equals. While they are similar — if you're looking for a Canadian Rockies train tour, both options will be happy to comply — each train offers a very different experience, and is suited to a different traveler.
With over 25 years experience designing rail vacations through Canada's vast landscapes, we've developed a knack for pairing travelers with their perfect rail trip. Over the years, we've ridden both trains more times than we can count and have planned even more journeys for our guests.

The Main Difference between Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail
Let's start with the clearest distinction between Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail:
Rocky Mountaineer is a daytime-only ride between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies. That means the train operates exclusively in daylight hours — departing in the morning, arriving in the evening — breaking its multi-day journeys with (included) nights in hotel rooms. That also means that you'll never miss a mountain, canyon, or glacial lake outside your window.
VIA Rail runs day and night, country-wide. While VIA Rail is most often associated with the Canadian, the legendary trans-Canada sleeper train between Vancouver and Toronto, the rail system expands much further. It ventures through Quebec into the Maritimes, and north to remote communities in Manitoba and British Columbia. VIA Rail is your ticket to crack Canada open and explore it to its fullest. On its long-distance trains, you'll sleep onboard while it continues its journey. Short-distance train routes are typically completed in a single day.

Rocky Mountaineer
Rocky Mountaineer is the highest level of luxury rail travel in Canada. Onboard service is warm, gourmet meals grace your plate twice a day, and bi-level coaches offer upper-level seating to GoldLeaf Service passengers, and a vantage point over the upcoming views.
Rocky Mountaineer operates three routes through Western Canada, all beginning (or ending) in Vancouver. For 2026 only, there is an additional route running between Banff and Jasper.
- First Passage to the West — 2 days | Vancouver to Banff or Lake Louise
- Journey through the Clouds — 2 days | Vancouver to Jasper
- Rainforest to Gold Rush — 3 days | Vancouver to Jasper via Whistler
- [2026 only] Passage to Peaks — 2 days | Banff to Jasper
Each route follows the original Canadian Pacific Railway tracks, which themselves are steeped in history. These tracks were pivotal in connecting British Columbia to Eastern Canada and, thus, bringing the country together into what it is today.

Why Choose Rocky Mountaineer
There are so many reasons why you'd choose Rocky Mountaineer for your Canadian train trip.
From onboard Rocky Mountaineer, you'll have the very best views of the Canadian Rockies. Train travel is reserved for daylight hours, with your night spent in a hotel room, during the peak travel season, from April to October each year.
What most people think of on Rocky Mountaineer is the bi-level glass-dome coaches, a staple of GoldLeaf Service, Rocky Mountaineer's premium offering. For GoldLeaf Service passengers, the upper seating level sits beneath a near-complete glass dome, giving you an unobstructed view of absolutely everything. However, both GoldLeaf and SilverLeaf Service passengers get domed glass windows — partially, if generously, domed windows grace SilverLeaf's single-level coaches.
And then there's the round-the-clock service provided by onboard Hosts who do everything from serving seatside drinks and snacks, to divulging stories and history of the places you're in, to announcing rogue elk, bear, moose, or eagle sightings near the tracks.

The other perk is wandering down the spiral staircase to the dedicated dining car, where multi-course meals prepared by an onboard culinary team are served on fully set tables. If you're traveling in SilverLeaf Service, these will be brought to your seat. Meals, of course, feature locally sourced ingredients and wine to match the scenery.
Simply put, Rocky Mountaineer is luxury sightseeing on rails.

Who Should Choose Rocky Mountaineer
You should choose Rocky Mountaineer if you're looking to experience the very best of the Canadian Rockies by rail.
There are few better ways to view the Canadian Rockies than through upper-level glass-domed windows with no stress of driving, no demanding timetable, and a cool drink delivered to your seat on request. You’ll not only be traveling in style, but will be seeing views that can’t be seen by car, air, or foot. Pyramid Falls, for example, can only be seen by rail.
You’ll also likely learn more about your surroundings on Rocky Mountaineer, as the Hosts provide detailed commentary along the route. If you’re looking to really get in touch with your surroundings, Rocky Mountaineer might be your best choice.
There’s no denying that, for many, Rocky Mountaineer is a bucket-list trip. It's the train for anniversaries and milestone birthdays, and we frequently recommend it to our guests who mention they’re celebrating.

VIA Rail
Unlike Rocky Mountaineer, which is deeply rooted in the sightseeing experience, VIA Rail trains are rooted in just that: train travel.
VIA Rail operates both short-distance train routes, particularly the Corridor trains, which run between Toronto and Quebec City, and long-distance sleeper trains, from Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies to Halifax, in the eastern Maritimes, to Churchill on the Hudson Bay coast.
These are the classic long-distance sleeper trains that once were the gold standard for vacationing in style. They still hold that premium nostalgic feel, with multi-course meals served on white linen tables, social lounge cars (with stylishly glass-domed viewing on the second floor), and a turndown service transforming your private cabin into a cozy bedroom each night.
VIA Rail trains travel much further than Rocky Mountaineer. From Vancouver, you can go all the way to Halifax, if you want. It's a jaw-dropping journey that comprises over 3,900 miles, 3 different trains, and 7 days (including the strongly recommended layovers in Toronto and Montreal).
In this time, you'll see the West Coast's rainforest, the Canadian Rockies, the vast prairies, the wooded and lake-studded Canadian Shield, and finally pop out at the wild Atlantic Ocean. Or, you can just go as far as Jasper, spending one night onboard, and waking up in the Canadian Rockies ready to tour the mountains.

Why Choose VIA Rail
VIA Rail excels at classic sleeper train travel, throwing in the added bonuses of glass-dome viewing cars and multi-course meals (included in Sleeper Plus and Prestige Class fares). Across several service classes, you can experience rail tourism's golden age in a private cabin complete with oversized windows and comfortable beds.
The main appeal of VIA Rail trains is their expansive route, from Vancouver to Halifax, or Winnipeg (near the US border) to Churchill, on the country's northern coast. For these kinds of trips, it's not only the only option, but a fantastic one. It's an approach to travel that's much less common these days, and brings with it a tight community that forms onboard each trip.
However, a short trip on VIA Rail — one night onboard between Vancouver and Jasper, or a 3-and-a-half-hour ride between Quebec City and Montreal — is just as worth it. While clearly less expansive than the full coast-to-coast option, breakfast over views of Mount Robson (the tallest mountain in the Rockies) is a glorious start to any Canadian Rockies vacation. And the Corridor trains offer comfortable, convenient, and scenic routes between Eastern Canada's cities.
19 Hours on the Canadian Train: Canadian Rockies by Rail
Team Member Rowan Ball recounts her recent winter train trip on VIA Rail’s Canadian train.
You'll spend your days (and nights) on VIA Rail trains between private cabins and social lounges.
If you're traveling in Sleeper Plus Class, something we recommend to all our guests riding overnight, your cabin converts from a seat to a proper bed each evening, made up by your attendant while you're at dinner. In Prestige class, the highest service level available on The Canadian, your private cabin is considerably more spacious, with a fold-down double bed, in-room TV, and an en-suite shower.

The Skyline Cars — the retro-futuristic glass-dome observation coaches that have become one of VIA Rail's most recognizable features — are open to all passengers. We can say from experience that they tend to develop their own social atmosphere as the journey progresses. You find yourself talking to strangers, swapping stories as the sun sets over the Canadian Rockies' foothills or rises into the vast Saskatchewan sky.
VIA Rail has one more thing that Rocky Mountaineer doesn't: winter travel. We've taken the Canadian train in winter countless times ourselves, and designed a number of best-selling itineraries around it.

Who Should Choose VIA Rail
VIA Rail suits the traveler who wants the rail journey itself to be the vacation. That is, a traveler who is excited to explore the country by rail, and cannot wait for the train to pull out.
The act of crossing a country by train is an unhurried experience, and best for people who enjoy the quiet hours on a long train journey. If you're looking for a relaxing break from modern life's hustle, you'll find it somewhere between Jasper and Toronto on the Canadian.
That being said, staff host events and activities at least once a day, and between that, meals taken in the dining car, and conversation with your fellow passengers, we find our guests have no issue with idle time, and revel in the chance to enjoy the simpler things.
It's also worth noting that VIA Rail is, in general, more accessible in terms of price point than Rocky Mountaineer, particularly in Sleeper Plus classes. So if you're looking for a train trip to the Rockies, this is an excellent way to experience iconic Canadian train travel without the same investment as Rocky Mountaineer.

Sometimes, the Answer is Both
After over 25 years of designing Canadian rail vacations, we've learned that for many of our guests, the most extraordinary trips combine both.
An example: Start with VIA Rail. Board the Canadian in Vancouver and settle into your sleeper cabin as you pull out of the city, pass the Fraser Valley farmland, and head towards the foothills and, eventually, Jasper National Park. Once you arrive in Jasper, disembark for four days touring the Canadian Rockies. Then, to return, board Rocky Mountaineer in Banff for the westbound run back to Vancouver along different tracks in full daylight.
Canadian Rockies Rail Tour Grand Circle
Canadian Rockies by Rail Grand Circle Tours combines Rocky Mountaineer with VIA Rail for the ultimate train adventure.
Or, begin your journey to the Canadian Rockies onboard Rocky Mountaineer. Then, after spending time exploring the mountains, board VIA Rail eastbound towards Toronto or Halifax. By the time you arrive, you will have seen the country.
We've built a number of combined itineraries around exactly this pairing, including multi-week journeys beginning at the Pacific and ending at the Atlantic, touching (nearly) every province along the way.
Grand Canadian Rail Journey | Vancouver to Halifax
Grand Canadian Rail Journey begins on Rocky Mountaineer before switching to VIA Rail to travel far beyond the Canadian Rockies.
These trips are indulgent and just a touch extravagant. We recommend combination trips for guests marking milestone celebrations, birthdays, and important anniversaries.
