Grand Canada Railway Hotels | Fairmont Palliser Hotel

INTRODUCTION

The Fairmont Palliser is a historic luxury hotel situated in downtown Calgary, Alberta. Opened in 1914 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, it was built to accommodate the growing number of travelers arriving via the expanding rail network. Named after Captain John Palliser, a 19th-century explorer of Western Canada, the hotel quickly became a symbol of sophistication and progress in the region.

Designed by architect Lawrence Gotch, the 12-story structure reflects the Chicago Commercial style, with design elements inspired by Alberta's prairie grain elevators. Upon opening, the hotel offered 350 guest rooms equipped with then-modern amenities such as hot and cold running water, mahogany doors, and brass beds. Its public spaces featured oak paneling, marble columns, and ornate candelabras, capturing the grandeur of the era.

Throughout its history, the Fairmont Palliser has welcomed numerous dignitaries and celebrities, including members of the British Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed in the Royal Suite during their visits to Calgary in the 1990s. Its central location remains ideal for exploring the city’s top attractions.

Today, the Fairmont Palliser continues to blend historic charm with contemporary luxury, offering 407 elegantly appointed guest rooms and a timeless experience in the heart of Calgary.
